Message from MOSHAPE President Dennis Docheff

 

Session 1-  MO Resources Collaboration: Tools for Today and the Future: MOSHAPE President Dennis Docheff opens the convention and introduces Brad Brummel. This session explores resources created to help PE & Health teachers spur ideas, plan, problem solve, etc., for years to come. These resources are supported by DESE and created by MO PE & Health teachers and Directors. We also share ways to help teachers build Professional Learning Communities and collaborate at district, region, state, and national levels. Presented by Sally Schulte, Brad Brummel, & Patrick Fine – Sally Schulte, MOSHAPE Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2018,is currently teaching K-6 PE/Health in Wentzville, MO. 2018. Brad Brummel is the Coordinator of PE/Health and Engagement for the Springfield Public Schools.  Dr. Patrick Fine [MOSHAPE President-Elect] is the Content Facilitator for the Rockwood School District.

Session 2 - Pandemic PE: The purpose of this session is to provide Physical Education teachers with activities they can use with their students, whether students are physical distancing face-to-face, virtually learning, or learning at-home. Learn different ways to incorporate technology into these lessons. Presented by Drew Burris. Drew has been teaching PE for 10 years, is the PK-2nd PE teacher at Ridgeview Elementary in Warrensburg, MO.  Drew has published in Great Activities Magazine/PE Central/G.A.M.E.S. Gazette; 2018 Missouri West Central District Elementary PE TOY.

Session 3 - Students Taking Charge of Their Health? Here’s the Solution: Making healthy choices in high school is difficult. The “Healthe Foundations” program helps students make connections between daily lifestyle choices and behaviors.  An engaging online format adaptable to virtual instruction, student groups collaborate to investigate, diagnose, and treat a virtual patient. Teams educate their patient about their medical condition, set goals – emphasizing diet and fitness – and then present their findings. Come learn about this no-cost program!  Presented by Amy Merritt – [former MOSHAPE President] Amy retired after 33 years of teaching Health/PE and being the Curriculum Specialist for the Lee's Summit School District. She is now is Sr. Program Manager of Healthe Foundations for First Hand, Cerner Corporation’s philanthropic foundation.

Session 4 - Access, Equity and Diversity: Universal Design Principles to Support Student
Learning: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is used as a framework for planning experiences to support student learning across a variety of teaching modalities. This session introduces practices underpinning UDL and offers attendees the opportunity to implement the UDL components of engagement, representation and action and expression, whether teaching face-to-face or remotely. Participants gain knowledge of UDL principles to support student learning, access, and engagement with their curricula, with a special focus on the variety of modalities induced by the COVID pandemic, including technology tools that support UDL principles. Presented by Michelle Grenier –Dr. Grenier is a recognized expert in the field of inclusion and adapted physical education. She has authored or co-authored several publications; her most recent publication, Universal Design for Learning in Physical Education. At the University of New Hampshire Dr. Grenier oversees the adapted physical education concentration at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She is the currently the president of the National Consortium of Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities (NCPEID)  and is the former chair of the national APE (AAHPERD) association.

LIVE SESSION-7:00 p.m. (CT) -The Impact of Social Media on Advocacy During the COVID-19 Pandemic This live panel discussion is for anyone involved in creating/promoting social media content for the purpose of advocacy. The impact of leveraging social media within the HPE community is paramount to building influence and advocacy at the local, state, and national levels.  This panel discusses the challenges and opportunities with data-driven, call-to-action strategies of social media to drive desired outcomes. Presented by4 SHAPE America Presidents [Terri Drain (2021), Brett Fuller (2020), Jamie Sparks (2019), Judy LoBianco (2018)] and Guy Danhoff. This panel discussion is sponsored by Heart Zones, Inc.

A message from Dr. Tom Loughrey, MOSHAPE Executive Director

Session 1 - Featured Presentationhealth. moves. minds.: The Program Every School Needs - health. moves. minds. is a new service-learning program from SHAPE America, focusing on SEL that Health & PE teachers need.  This session offers a virtual look at how SEL competencies are seamlessly embedded within HPE activities, as well as how a teacher can make a positive impact on school wellness and help students live their best lives, emotionally and physically! Presented by Michelle Carter – Michelle is the Director of Educational Content and Programs for SHAPE America; she is responsible for the development and review of educational content, as well as SHAPE America’s signature Teacher of the Year program.  She draws from her educational background and service as a physical education and health teacher in the District of Columbia Public Schools.

Session 2 - Increasing Engagement in Physical Education-It’s Virtually Possible!: The purpose of this session is to learn and discuss various strategies for increasing motivation and engagement in the physical education classroom, whether in the gym or online.  This exploration of new ideas and possibilities has a focus the elementary level, but could work for middle school, too. Presented by Ron Ramspott – [former MOSHAPE president] Ron is retired from the parkway School District. Ron served in elementary Physical Education and Health for over 30 years; he also served as a district coordinator.  This longtime MOSHAPE member is a former Missouri TOY.

Session 3 -Integrating WSCC Model into PETE Program: Strategies and Practices: The Whole School Whole Community Whole Child (WSCC) model promotes school children's well-being. Teacher education programs are not prepared to integrate the WSCC model into the Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) curriculum, where pre-service teachers are expected to implement WSCC in their future schools. This session shares strategies, practices, and learning activities with teacher educators interested in integrating the WSCC model in their PETE program. Presented by Xiuye Xie – Xiuye Xie (‘show-yeah-shay’) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Missouri State University.  Before working at MSU, Xie was at Western Michigan University for two years. Xie actively advocates for developing school children’s health and physical literacy and is passionate about training HPE future professionals.  

Session 4 - Student Teaching During the COVID Pandemic: Student teaching can be difficult during the best of times; imagine the difficulty of student teaching during the COVID pandemic--quarantines, virtual teaching, dealing with a fluid state of education. This session provides future professionals with a realistic view of student teaching.  Current student teachers share their experiences during this COVID pandemic.  Questions and answers secured from future professionals are addressed during the session. Presented by Richard Edwards and Roberto Duro – Richard Edwards is a student at Northwest Missouri State University and President of the NWMS Future Physical Educators Club.  Roberto Duro is from Madrid, Spain and is a student at William Woods University.  Both presenters are currently student teaching this semester.


Saturday, November 14

Session 1 - Keynote Presentation --SEL and health.moves.mindsLearn how we approached and applied Social Emotional Learning to a large high school population using health.moves.minds. This process is ongoing and will show how Neuqua Valley High School started and is still incorporating SEL, even in a remote environment. Presented by Bill Casey – Mr. Casey is currently the Department Chair for P.E., Health and Driver Education at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois. Bill has taught at every grade level (K-12) and is in his 29th year of teaching.  He is active in Illinois AHPERD by assisting in setting up the annual convention as well as managing the technology used by the organization.  His school piloted the health.Moves.minds. program at the high school level in the 2018-2019 school year, which continued the following school year.

Session 2 -Featured Presentation Series –Moving Forward...A Path to Addressing Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) in Health & Physical Education: The session includes health and physical educators from all levels of education (K-12 and Higher Education). The discussion addresses issues of equity, access, and inclusion in a variety of teaching environments. The panel discusses the challenges and areas of opportunity for teachers to promote inclusion in HPE instruction. Lead by Sean Nevills – Sean currently serves as project director of the COVID-19 project, funded by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) for SHAPE America. He most recently served as Director of Health & Physical Education with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Sean is a former physical education teacher and sports coach. Sean serves MOSHAPE on the Strategic Plan Task Force and the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Task Force. This is a multiple part series. Session 3 - Assessments in Secondary Physical EducationStill grading on participation only in your physical education courses? Why not assess students on what they are learning while in your class? This presentation explains what quality assessments can look like in a secondary physical education setting and how to start using them. Presented by Melanie Zerr – [MOSHAPE President] Melanie has been teaching physical education and health for 18 years, 16 of them in the Wentzville School District. She is a member of her district's Flexible Learning Cohort where they are researching better ways to educate today's students. Melanie was named the 2018 Missouri Secondary Teacher of the Year and Central District Teacher of the Year. If that is not enough, she has won multiple horseshoe titles including the 2019 women's division champion of the Annual State Tournament. 

Session 4 - 10 Ways to Create a SEL Skills-Based Health Classroom: This session shares SEL skills-based health education assessments and activities to encourage a safe, inclusive, and collaborative environment. Assessments focus on decision-making, self-management, and positive relationships. Attendees secure 10 new skills-based activities and assessments and strategies for implementing activities in a remote learning environment. Attendees also receive complimentary access to the 2021 copyright, skills-based health education resources from Goodheart-Willcox. Presented by Mary McCarley – National Content Specialist for Health Education with Goodheart-Willcox and co-author of their middle school health education textbook. A former health education teacher, Mary was the 2016 SHAPE America Southern District High School Teacher of the Year for the Advancement of Health Education.

Awards Ceremony-Live session at 2pm (CT) The 2020 MOSHAPE Virtual Convention concludes with an Awards Celebration, recognizing people who have demonstrated exemplary work in supporting and promoting MOSHAPE.  The live session begins at 2:00 p.m. (via Zoom) and is hosted by Sandy Moore. Link will be sent via email.
